As the cement industry accelerates its journey toward decarbonisation, Industry 4.0 solutions, such as advanced process control, have emerged as a cornerstone for enabling transformation. Simply put, there is no green transition without digitalisation. However, as with any change, getting the foundations right is critical to achieving the desired outcomes. This presentation will explore how robust digital foundations—anchored in technologies such as FLSmidth Cement’s QCX/RoboLab® automated laboratories and QCX/AutoSampling automated sampling systems—are critical enablers of Industry 4.0 in cement production. By providing error-free sampling and analysis, these systems provide crucial, high-quality data that are the bedrock of advanced process control. By leveraging this sample data alongside other process data, advanced process control systems, such as FLSmidth Cement’s ECS/ProcessExpert® software, support cement plants in unlocking the full potential of key sustainability strategies, including alternative fuels, raw material substitution, energy efficiency improvements, and carbon capture initiatives, without impacting product and process quality. Through illustrative case studies, the session will demonstrate how the QCX/RoboLab and QCX/AutoSampling systems support advanced automation solutions and contribute to emission reduction and cost savings while enhancing process reliability and consistency. At the same time, it will candidly address the industry's roadblocks: cybersecurity vulnerabilities, fragmented performance metrics, and organisational resistance to technological adoption.
